For your consideration, a fine copy of W.A. Dwiggins' “Paraphs” in a very good if broken slipcase.
Written and illustrated by author, type designer, illustrator, book and binding designer, and marionette maker William Addison Dwiggins in 1928, under his tongue-in-cheek alter-ego, the pompous and critical Hermann Püterschein. Dwiggins own private press was named the “Püterschein Press,” and later in conjunction with his long-time assistant, and champion Dorothy Abbe, as “Hingham-Putershein, and the Press of the Little Red Hen.”
Dwiggins was peerless as a multi-faceted artist and craftsman. He combined a keen intellect with a sharp sense of humor, and a practitioner's ability to convey the details of process in a clean and concise way. This book is et another fruit of his genius.
Published by Alfred A. Knopf, printed at The Plimpton Press in Norwood, Massachusetts, and issued by the fictitious "Society of Calligraphers" as their first publication, it was also the last. Dwiggins had a long association with both Knopf and Plimpton. One might suppose that the creation of the Society of Calligraphers was directly attributable to Dwiggins' membership in the Society of Printers of which he and many of the best names in New England printing, design, and graphic arts were members.
This copy, no. 420 of 500 is fine in all regards. The spine label is as new; bright and clean. The boards are unscuffed, the book block is clean, bright and the binding tight. The slipcase is remarkably well preserved with no cracks to the joints. The sole defect is a chunk of the back panel has somehow come away. The slip is otherwise tight with minor age tone and soiling as one might expect from a book almost 100 years old.
