For your consideration, a very nice copy of “The History of Oliver and Arthur.” Written in French in 1511, translated into German by Wilhelm Liely in 1521, and (now) done into English by William Leighton and Eliza Barrett, 1903 .
Set in Priory Text with calligraphic characters drawn by Bruce Rogers. Illustrations from woodcuts drawn by Rogers. Exceptionally well printed in red and black on handmade paper watermarked “Unbleached Arnold.” Quarter bound natural-finish linen and blue green Japanese handmade wove paper over board; with a paper spine label printed in red.
This is a prime example of Roger's “allusive typography.” Typography deliberately designed to evoke another time and place, in this instance, 16th-Century France
No. 74/330 copies. Riverside Press Edition no. 20
This copy is very good. The spine and label are age toned, but the interior is clean and bright. The joints and hinges are strong. No previous owner's marks. The head of the spine is chipped, the heel in intact.
